Cultural Adjustment/Social
Programming
The ALI provides a variety of programming to help students adjust to life in the U.S. and to learn about America and its society.
• The ALI sponsors monthly activities which might include: cultural workshops, holiday home tours, picnics, trips to historic sites, local parks, and area shopping. Students are encouraged to participate in the Office of International Affairs “International Friends Program.”
• Guest speakers are invited to IEP classes to provide additional information about local culture, outdoor activities, acculturation tips, and academic information.
• Students are encouraged to participate in International Education Week activities, which take place in the third week of November. They are also encouraged to become active in student organizations, such as the International Student Club.
• Following New International Student Orientation, students are introduced to full-time university students from their own countries to assist in acclimating them to a new environment.
• Students are invited to serve as guest speakers in area schools, providing students in a rural community an opportunity to meet people from countries they’ve studied in elementary, secondary, and community college classes.
